Tanzanite Takes Centre Stage on France 2!

On 21 December 2020, the 8 pm news on France 2 featured Tanzania, and more specifically its precious stone: tanzanite

What is tanzanite?

1000 times rarer than diamonds, tanzanite is a precious stone that exists only in Tanzania, which is a source of pride for the Tanzanian people. Born at the foot of the Roof of Africa: Kilimanjaro, tanzanite is recognisable by its deep blue colour. It can only be found over 14 km2, and these few areas are highly sought after and leased by private individuals hoping to come across a real mine, not of gold this time, but of tanzanite…

The biggest stones in Tanzania’s history!

A few weeks ago, in a mine belonging to a man from the Maasai community, a real jackpot was found. Indeed, because of its rarity, tanzanite is worth a great deal of money. The man found a 6 kg tanzanite and another weighing 9 kg. They were sold to the Tanzanian government for €2.9 million! Enough to delight the former owner and change the fate of many people…

A benefit for the Maasai community

The discoverer decided to donate part of the money from the sale of his stones to the Maasai community and to build a school to enable the most disadvantaged to still send their children to school.

What future for these precious stones?

Tanzanite is cut in Arusha. It is then sold in the country’s jewellers or abroad.
Tanzanite is also known as “the gemstone of a generation” because there will soon be none left to extract. It is said that it will only be found for around another fifteen years. Make the most of it before the price becomes even more exorbitant!
