Bagamoyo is a must-see destination for cultural tourism in Tanzania.

This former capital of German East Africa, founded at the end of the 18th century, was a major centre of maritime trade in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Its economy was then based on the transport of fish, salt and rubber. In the first half of the 19th century, these goods gave way to ivory and slaves, who were transported to the island of Zanzibar. Today, the local population mainly lives from agriculture, fishing and livestock farming.

Different sites let you delve into the history of this very distinctive coastal town:

The Kaole ruins

The archaeological site of Kaole bears witness to the presence of the Kaole settlement dating from the 18th century on the lands of Bagamoyo. Remains of the oldest district in East Africa’s coastal region, the Kaole ruins are among the historic sites not to be missed on a day visit. The site includes an old mosque, a house, and two tombs dating from the 18th century. This mosque is regarded as the oldest in the country and one of the oldest in East Africa.

The Catholic Museum

The Catholic Museum, located north of the town, reveals another aspect of Bagamoyo’s history. This small museum lets you learn more about the slave trade, the history of Dr Livingstone and the missionaries, as well as discover Tanzania’s first church, together with a large collection of objects linked to Bagamoyo’s past.

The Caravan Serai Museum

This small museum dedicated to the slave trade is housed in a historic building, an old guesthouse reserved for slave traders in the 19th century. There you will discover an exhibition made up of objects associated with the slave and ivory trade.

Visit Bagamoyo’s beaches

A change of scenery on the white sandy beaches lined with coconut palms of this town rich in history. Bagamoyo is a cultural destination that also has many seaside attractions. Time for relaxation and swimming on these beautiful stretches of white sand along the Indian Ocean. This break from it all, feet in the water, will also be an opportunity to observe the daily life of the local fishermen.

Exploration of Saadani National Park

The Saadani National Park offers a distinctive approach to safari in Tanzania. Indeed, it is one of the few wildlife sanctuaries situated on the edge of the Indian Ocean. The coastal climate enjoyed by Saadani National Park gives it a unique environment. A protected area that stands out for its landscapes, but above all for the great variety of terrestrial and marine species it is home to. Due to its special location, vegetation and wild character, spotting elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and even antelopes is less easy than in the northern parks, which have large populations of animals. Saadani National Park offers a more exclusive safari experience, off the beaten track, for a memorable trip. Located 44 km north of Bagamoyo, it is accessible by car, but also by boat via the Wami River. A dream opportunity to get close to the hippos and crocodiles that have made Saadani their home.

Immersion in Bagamoyo’s local culture

Artisanal fishing practised in the Wami and Ruvu estuaries is one of the main economic activities of the town of Bagamoyo, alongside the cultivation of algae and crustaceans. This way of life based on fishing and agriculture is an integral part of the local culture. Make the most of your stay in Bagamoyo to immerse yourself in this world by visiting a fishing village, tasting local produce in a traditional restaurant and sharing a special moment with the local people.

A stroll through the old town of Bagamoyo

The architecture of Bagamoyo’s old town reveals multiple influences. As you wander through the narrow streets, you will discover carved wooden doors typical of Arab architecture as well as German colonial houses. The old post office, the country’s first primary school, the hanging tower, the art market, the old mosques, the fish market and the Caravan Serail museum are among the buildings not to be missed during your visit to Bagamoyo’s old town.

Excursion to the Mafia Island Marine Reserve

A true sanctuary for marine life, the Mafia Island reserve is an unmissable stop for lovers of scuba diving or snorkelling. This exceptional marine park, located close to Zanzibar, is certainly the richest in the Indian Ocean. Coral reefs, colourful fish, paradise beaches, turquoise lagoons, sea turtles: an excursion to Mafia Island Marine Reserve will more than fulfil all expectations.

Trekking in the mountains of the Bagamoyo hinterland

For the more sporty, a stay in Bagamoyo can be combined with a trek on the slopes of the Usambara Mountains. An exceptional natural site still little known in Tanzania despite the beauty of the panoramas it offers. An off-the-beaten-track adventure hike for a privileged discovery of the local fauna and flora!
