Why go to Mount Meru?

Mount Meru, a dormant volcano in Tanzania, home to lush green forest and various wild animals such as giraffes, buffalo, zebras, colobus monkeys, etc…
The last time it erupted was in 1910, although it is worth noting that steam was emitted from the volcano between 2014 and 2015. The first ascent was by Fritz Jager in 1904.
Climbing Mount Meru is breathtaking. With its magnificent landscapes, views of Kilimanjaro and often calm and peaceful atmosphere, it is also a journey of self-discovery.
A hike up this mountain can be training to prepare you for the Kilimanjaro trek, Africa’s highest peak in Tanzania, standing at 19,340 feet above sea level.
The high altitude and steep slope explain the frequent bouts of altitude sickness.
The Mount Meru trek
This trek will begin with the crossing of Ngare Nanyuki River among buffaloes and giraffes, accompanied by a ranger for your safety. A magnificent walk between forest and clearing in the heart of Arusha National Park, where your guide will find you a pleasant spot for a picnic
Then around 4 hours of walking and 1,000 m of elevation gain. The temperature at this altitude remains very pleasant, the vegetation is lush, almost tropical, and gradually gives way to heather.
Finally, after an early wake-up (1:30 am) you will set off to reach the summit of Mount Meru; allow 5–6 hours of walking through an almost lunar landscape. You will reach Rhino Point after 1 hour of walking, then you will cross a narrow and airy ridge, and after a long effort you will finally be able to admire the landscape.
At 4,566 m, all the main volcanoes of the north of the country are visible, notably the nearby Kilimanjaro opposite Mt Meru. The return to Saddle Hut will take 3 hours of walking, where lunch will be waiting for you.
An expert by your side for your trekking in Tanzania. Each guide has completed extensive mountain guide training with physical, technical and cultural tests over several years. They have received mountain rescue training as well as training in the use of a hyperbaric chamber. They have acquired knowledge of the mountain environment (fauna and flora) and know how to successfully lead both a short trek and a major ascent.
Travellers are often advised to combine their trek on Mount Meru with a safari in Tarangire National Park or Lake Manyara.
When is the best time to visit Mount Meru?
We advise you to go to Mount Meru during the dry season, which runs from June to early March. You will enjoy the fine weather and better visibility for observing Arusha National Park.
How do you get to Mount Meru?
Travellers can take flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport, Nairobi Airport, and Dar es Salaam Airport.
However, it is important to note that no buses or public transport offer journeys to Mount Meru. You will therefore need to make your own way there by hiring a car or taking a taxi.
